Total Wine & More has opened in Myrtle Beach and wine
lovers are drinking it in. With the doors opening for the first time at 9:00
a.m. on Thursday, hundreds of wine shoppers came looking for new and different
vino, as well as bargains on favorite vintages.
The family owned company began in Delaware in 1991 with two
brothers who believed that service, selection, and great prices would create a
successful business model. Since then, 195 stores have opened in 23 states,
making Total Wine the largest independent wine retailer in the country. The
Myrtle Beach store is the company’s newest.
The store is located on Seaboard Street next to Michaels, and across the street from Home Depot, in the former HHGregg appliance store. The old store afforded plenty of room for wine as well as liquors. There is one door to enter from the outside, but when you’re in the entry, be aware that there are actually two stores. The doors to the left will lead you to the liquors and the door on the right goes to the wine and beer.
The volume of the selections is almost overwhelming. Need
vodka? There are dozens of brands and sizes to choose from, along with mixers
and other bar needs.
Wine is divided by type, country, grape, whatever you’re
looking for. Along with Chardonnay, Cabernet, and Pino Grigio, you’ll find
French Bordeaux and Beaujolais, Italian Chianti, and German Riesling. Prices
are clearly marked and not everything on the top shelf is expensive, so look
carefully for some interesting bargains.
In addition to wine and spirits, Total Wine & More has
beer, craft beer, local beer, and beer from all over the world. Just as with
the wine, there is a beer desk where you can get information about the many beers
available. A number of craft beers from Myrtle Beach’s growing list of local
breweries is available as well.
One of the best features of Total Wine is the ability to taste some of the wines before you buy. There are several places throughout the store where wine tasting is set up. The experts here will tell you about the wines and offer a selection where you can see for yourself if it’s something you want to buy.
There is a danger, however. You might find yourself pushing
a full cart up to the checkout like I did.
