You can eat every day in different Myrtle Beach restaurants - three meals a day, and snacks, and coffee - and you still won’t cover them all in a year, or two years, or even three. Moreover, it seems like every day a new local eatery opens its doors, offering everything from fresh caught seafood to Carolina bar-b-cue, and that’s just fine by me.
I love to eat and I know I’m not alone.
Food is our fuel. It keeps us going, but it’s really so much more. Eating is a social event, it’s a sensory experience, and it’s a way to explore the culture of a region. With so many people moving to the Grand Strand, our food culture is changing. Ten years ago you’d have been hard-pressed to find a New York deli anywhere in the Lowcountry . Now there are several, bringing the taste of the Big Apple to South Carolina.
Do you like ice cream? Custard? Italian ices? How about handmade chocolates, cake pops,
scones, and cannoli? I have to admit, I can't pass up a bakery and there are dozens of bakeries, candy and frozen treats shops all over the Strand that offer these goodies and more. One of my favorites is Kudzu Bakery. They started out in Georgetown in 1989 and now have three locations along the Strand. Oh, the bread! I can smell it now!
I think pizza also falls into the fun eats category, although I know some people think of it as a food group. You can go on an epic quest for the best pizza and find every pizza style known in the universe right in Myrtle Beach. Scatori’s in the Market Commons was voted Best Pizza on the Grand Strand in 2014, so I’d start there.
Can’t get enough local shrimp? Seafood restaurants abound, and you’ll find many of them overlooking the places of the daily catch. Murrells Inlet’s Marsh Walk is a great spot to find locally caught shrimp and fish, at restaurants like Wahoo’s Fish House, Captain Dave’s Dockside, and Wicked Tuna.
Farther up the coast in Little River is Clark’s Seafood and Chop House overlooking the harbor, and the Parson’s Table, a local institution housed in a historic church building. Just over the state line is Calabash, famous for its fried shrimp and hush puppies with places like Ella’s of Calabash and the Calabash Seafood Hut. You can also find Calabash style seafood in local restaurants in Myrtle Beach like the Original Captain Benjamin’s on Highway 17 North and Bennett’s Calabash, which has three locations along the Strand.
Continue on up Highway 17 to Shallotte for some great fresh seafood and views that can't be beaten. Try the Grillin Crab downtown on the Shallotte River or Inlet View Bar & Grill with an ocean view.
Variety is the spice of life, so they say, and Myrtle Beach restaurants offer lots of spicy flavor. From ethnic food to country cooking and from five-star to hole in the wall, you’ll find it all here at the Beach. For a lot of options within walking distance, go to the Market Common. One of my favorite lunch spots is Crepe Creation Café which offers light French cooking and a glass of wine. Tupelo Honey Café features the same clean eating Southern comfort foods that their other locations in Greenville, Ashevile and Raleigh offer, and the King Street Grille is a great place to have some wings and watch the game.
Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach has several places to eat like Umberto’s Pittsburgh-Italian Trattoria which features HUGH pork chop plates (yes, you will be taking some home) and Joe’s Crab Shack. One of several River City Café restaurants is also here, as well as the House of Blues for both great food and an evening of entertainment.
Although you’ll see concentrations of restaurants and cafes all over the Grand Strand, the traditional Restaurant Row is located on Highway 17 at the north end of Myrtle Beach. This stretch of road from just north of the Carolina Opry to just south of the Tanger Outlets is home to a couple of dozen seafood restaurants like Original Captain Benjamin’s, as well as long-time favorites like Thoroughbreds Restaurant.

$ Art Burger Sushi Bar - Burgers, sushi, art and a liquid nitrogen bar, they all go together according to this eatery’s concept. Located in downtown Myrtle Beach, Art serves grass-fed beef gourmet burgers, glutten-free buns, and gives local artists a place to showcase their talents.
$ - $$ Tupelo Honey Café – Soups, sandwiches, Southern, Tupleo Honey believes in local produce and country cooking. Fried green tomatoes, baked macaroni and cheese, and shrimp and grits are only the beginning.
