Murrells Inlet Schools and other Grand Strand School Districts

Trying to decide which Murrells Inlet Schools your children should go to is not very easy. You can’t tell by your zip code.

Located south of Myrtle Beach in Georgetown County, this historic fishing village has grown like every place else on the Grand Strand. Both it and its immediate neighbor Garden City Beach share the same zip code (29576) which straddles the county line of both Georgetown and Horry counties. Even if you have a Murrells Inlet or Garden City address, it depends on which side of the county line you live as to which school district you are in.

For instance, if you live in Wachesaw Plantation, you’re in Georgetown County, but if you live in the large development of Prince Creek, which is located in both counties, you need to check the county line. If you live off North Prince Creek Parkway you’re in the Horry County Schools district and if you live off South Prince Creek Parkway you’re in the Georgetown County Schools District.

Most of Garden City is in Horry County, but if you live on South Waccamaw Drive, that is in Georgetown County. So again, check to see which side of the county line you are to determine which school district you are in.

Students who live south of the county line attend schools in Pawleys Island. Waccamaw Elementary School (pre-kindergarten through 3rd grade), Waccamaw Intermediate School (grades 4-6),Waccamaw Middle School (grades 7 & 8), and Waccamaw High School (grades 9-12) are the public schools for the whole island.

In addition, two of the Grand Strand’s three Montessori schools are located in Pawleys Island. One is private and the other is Coastal Montessori Charter School which is part of the Georgetown County Public School system.  CMCS offers a free education option for students in grades 1-6.

Brunswick County Schools

North and east of Myrtle Beach you cross the state line into North Carolina and enter the Brunswick Islands. Since this a state line and not a county line, the zip codes are clearly defined and the school district is governed by North Carolina.

Both Little River (29566) and North Myrtle Beach (29582) border North Carolina on their northeast ends and are part of the Horry County School district. Calabash (28476) borders South Carolina on its southwest side and is in the Brunswick County school district. You’ll know you’ve crossed over to the other side if the zip code starts with a 28 or a 29, so in this case, do check your zip code.

Brunswick County Schools has 10 elementary schools, four middle schools, three high schools plus Early College High School, and one alternative school.  The district operates a completely different schedule from South Carolina and school start dates and holidays are different.

Schools serving the Calabash, Carolina Shores, and Sunset Beach area include Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary School in Ash, Union Elementary School in Shallotte, Waccamaw K-8 School in Ash, Shallotte Middle School, and West Brunswick High School in Shallotte.

In Brunswick County, as in South Carolina, there are several private schools available and home schooling is also an option.
