In the city? In the county? Which of the two electricity companies serving the Grand Strand should you call? That all depends on where you live.
Santee Cooper supplies electrical power to over two million retail customers. They are also the primary source of power for the state's 20 electric cooperatives, including Horry Electric Cooperative, Inc.
Unfortunately, if you're moving to Myrtle Beach or to another location within the Grand Strand, there is no easy way to tell which power company serves your neighborhood except to call them and ask. A general rule of thumb is that Santee Cooper operates within the Myrtle Beach city limits and Horry Electric serves the county and other municipalities. If you live outside Horry County, or in Brunswick County, North Carolina, you'll need to check below for other service providers.
With six offices located in Horry and Georgetown counties, Santee Cooper offers residential service from North Myrtle Beach to Pawleys Island and the south end of the Waccamaw Neck. For new service call toll free (800) 804-7424. You’ll need the address of where you want to begin service, your social security number, and your contact phone number.
Santee Cooper charges a deposit of not less than $100 based on the two highest consecutive billing periods at the service address, for previously occupied properties. After 13 months of on-time payments, you can get your deposit back, or apply it to your final bill if you move out. If you have good credit and don’t want to pay the deposit, an acceptable credit check may be considered.
You are required to complete a Residential Service Request which you can get here at their website. Owners of rental property should apply for service so that if a tenant leaves and turns off the electricity, the account will automatically go back into your name, saving you a lot of money for only a $15 charge.

The 4th largest electric cooperative in the state, Horry Electric serves over 68,000 active meters. Started in 1940, the power company is a not for profit, member-owned corporation and is part of the Touchstone Energy Cooperative of electric utilities.
For new service call (843) 369-2211. All new customers must pay a $5 refundable membership fee, a $5 application fee and a $20 connection fee. A security deposit may also be required depending on your credit history.
In a rush? They’ll do same day service for an extra $50 fee. Fees are higher on weekends and after regular working hours, so plan accordingly if you can.
You’ll need a photo ID, the property address, and proof of ownership or rental (i.e., copy of your lease). They will do a credit check. Find more information here on their website.
